Welcome to the Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS) website!

PATS was formed to create a representative African respiratory society for the continent and to address the high burden of respiratory illnesses in Africa. The overall aim of PATS is to promote lung health in Africa through education, training, research and advocacy.  Since the first election in 2011, PATS has grown, becoming a voice for lung health in Africa, undertaking educational, research and advocacy initiatives and building African capacity to address the challenges of improving lung health on the continent.  PATS currently has 770 members from 33 different African countries.

PATS MECOR

The Pan African Thoracic Society – Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical and Operations Research (PATS-MECOR) course was started in 2007 and has run annually since. From 2007 to 2009 in Blantyre, Malawi and in 2010 to 2014 in Brackenhurst, Kenya.

Healthy Lung For Life

Healthy Lungs for Life is one of the largest ever lung health campaigns, raising awareness of the importance of healthy lungs to healthcare professionals, scientists, primary care, patients, policy makers and the public through a full range of events, projects and promotional activities.
In 2014, the theme is "Breathe clean air".

Manuscript publication by PATS MECOR graduates

Manuscript publication by PATS MECOR graduates

Drs Alphonsus Isara (pictured centre below) and Adesuwa Aigbokhaode have had a manuscript accepted by the South African Respiratory Journal entitled "Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Risk in Patients attending Medical Outpatient Clinics in University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria". Their paper was also referred to in the editorial.

PATS MECOR Level 1 student obtains MSc place

We are happy to report that Andre Bulabula started a MSc in Clinical Epidemiology programme at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) in February 2014.

We wish him success and hope to see him back at PATS MECOR later on this year.
